Oma's Cookbook
Sharing the heart of the home with a personal family recipe book.
Journey
Cooking and cuisine are often at the heart of every close-knit family. Food brings people together, often with memories of laughter and love around the dinner table. That makes passing down the recipes for how to recreate those moments with younger generations of children and grandchildren important, preserving those moments as part of a family’s story.
The commission for a collected recipe book meant that Marian — affectionately known as Oma — would have her favourite meals continued on across her family’s homes, keeping a piece of her close in a treasured keepsake.
Outcome
With the selected recipes supplied as a text document, I designed an A4 recipe book that was clear, accessible and contained a selection of photos of Marian and family gatherings.
Colour-tabbed pages allow for quick skimming to find desired meal types, with a large font for readability. Fully designed chapter pages and layout give the recipe book an engaging theme throughout, inspired by modern cooking literature.
“We love to cook in our family, making this recipe book incredibly special for us.
“Charlie was very open about his process, sharing ideas and design choices as he worked, which also gave us the chance to make decisions on factors we hadn’t considered and help shape the book before finalisation.
“We’re very happy with the way this turned out and have already had cousins and grandchildren sharing what they have made! It’s really brought us closer together.”
